Lens restoration
Foggy or yellowed headlights aren't just cosmetic; they reduce light output and compromise your ability to see and be seen at night—a genuine safety concern. Headlight Restoration removes the oxidized outer layer of plastic using progressive sanding and polishing, restoring clarity. We finish with a protective ceramic coating to prevent re-yellowing. This service is far safer and more effective than headlight replacement.
Headlight plastic oxidizes from constant UV exposure and weathering. The outer layers gradually become cloudy, yellowed, or chalky, scattering light and reducing brightness. The oxidation sits on the surface in multiple layers. We remove these layers using progressive sanding grits. We start with 800-grit sandpaper, which removes the worst oxidation and yellowing. We then progress through 1200-grit, 2000-grit, and finally 3000-grit, each stage smoothing the surface left behind by the coarser grit.
After sanding, we apply a polishing compound to further refine the surface and restore clarity. The lens gradually transforms from cloudy yellow to crystal clear. We frequently rinse and inspect to ensure even progress and to avoid over-sanding, which could thin the plastic excessively. Once clarity is restored, we apply a protective ceramic coating specifically formulated for polycarbonate headlight lenses.
This ceramic coating is the difference between a temporary fix and a long-term solution. It creates a hard, UV-resistant barrier that prevents future oxidation. Without this coating, headlights would yellow again within 12-18 months of exposure. With the coating, clarity is maintained for 2-3+ years. The improvement in light output and the elimination of the yellow haze is immediately noticeable and appreciated.
The service takes 1-1.5 hours for a pair of headlights and costs significantly less than OEM replacement headlights (which run $300-800 per unit on many vehicles). We recommend this service on any vehicle with visible headlight oxidation, especially older vehicles where replacement optics are expensive.
